England: As people age, they experience difficulties with memory, especially in terms of functioning.
According to the National Library of Medicine, working memory is defined as the minimum amount of information that the mind can store and use to perform cognitive tasks.
Researchers often look at ways to improve memory skills, and video gaming is one of those ways.
Scientists at the University of York, England, have said that the type of video games people play may have a positive effect on working memory capacity and can reduce mental distraction.
Researchers analyzed data from 482 participants for the study. The majority (297) of participants were female. Participants ranged in age from 18 to 81, and the scientists divided them into younger adults (ages 18-30) and older adults (ages 60-81).
Experts found in the study that older adults who played the puzzle game performed better than participants who did not play the game. Young adults, on the other hand, showed better mental ability by playing strategy games.
The researchers published their findings in the journal Heliyon.
