Sohail Ahmed, a senior actor, host and comedian associated with Pakistan drama and stage industry says that we can reform the society through theater but we have not done so and the kind of things done in theater are worthy of hanging.
A video clip of the senior actor is going viral on social media, in which he can be seen giving an interview to a private website. Any religious and cultural values could be better represented but we didn’t do that.
He said during the interview that the most effective and influential field in performing arts is theater and stage, Hindus in the subcontinent started it to teach their religious rituals to people and they are still up to date. Even through TV dramas and movies, we find the element of our religion and rituals, we promote it, but unfortunately we did not do that, instead we made fun of our traditions, rituals, laws and made strange jokes on it. .
Senior actor Sohail Ahmed added that when the theater was banned, the censor became stricter, people started saying that we have killed someone, we artists entertain people, that’s how we got hanged. So I have to say that the kind of things that have been done in the theater are going to be hanged.
He further said that all our departments, be it performing arts, film, theater or television, no one has determined the boundaries, till date no ruler has paid attention to this aspect, nor thought about it, this is a very important sector. It is not only entertainment provided through it but people also improve themselves, there are many intellectuals in our field who very easily say that we are showing only what people want to see, this should not be the case. I say make what you want people to see.
