Brussels: A new study has warned that paper straws, which were created as an eco-friendly alternative to plastic straws, are actually not environmentally friendly.
According to global media reports, experts have revealed that paper straws also contain chemicals that can harm human health.
“Products made from materials derived from plants or trees, such as paper or bamboo, are often considered more sustainable and environmentally friendly alternatives to plastic, but these products contain PFAS,” said Thimo Groffen, an environmental scientist at the University of Antwerp in Belgium. Named was a collection of chemicals that are harmful to human health.
The research, published in the journal Food Additives and Contaminants, saw Thimo Groffen and his colleagues test 39 straw brands for PFAS.
Straws were in paper, bamboo, glass, steel and plastic varieties. Each straw underwent two rounds of PFAS testing. 90% of PFAS was found in paper straw, which was higher than other straw types. 18 different PFAS chemicals were detected.
On the other hand, about 80% PFAS bamboo straw; 75% plastic straws and 40% glass straws were found in the brands. While PFAS was not detected in any of the steel straws.
