In the United States, an investigation is underway against 5,000 ex-military pilots for flying planes by changing their medical reports.

The Washington Post reports that two years ago, investigators concerned about retired officers discovered inconsistencies in the federal database.

The pilots under investigation were receiving benefits for mental disorders and other health-related ailments.

On the one hand, the pilots were receiving money from the government based on their health problems, on the other hand, they continued to fly planes by making changes in their medical records.

The Federal Aviation Agency (FAA) has closed half of the cases after completing the investigation of 4,800 pilots.

FAA spokesman Matthew Lehner says 60 of those pilots were a serious risk to aviation and were not allowed to fly when their records were checked.

About 600 pilots under investigation were flying passenger planes while others had commercial licenses based on which they flew cargo and VIP planes.
