Dozens of people were arrested for trying to rob or cheat the earthquake victims, while 12 people, including the contractors of the collapsed buildings, were detained.

UN officials fear that the death toll from the earthquake in Turkey and Syria could double.

The UN Secretary-General urged the Security Council to allow the opening of cross-border aid centers between Turkey and Syria, with the Security Council meeting to discuss Syria next week.

Meanwhile, the border between Armenia and Turkey was opened for the first time in 35 years, with the aim of allowing trucks loaded with food and water to enter the quake-hit area.

More than 12,000 buildings were either destroyed or severely damaged by the earthquake in Turkey.
