Dual Citizenship Bill Passed; It became easier for immigrants to acquire German citizenship

Berlin:

The German cabinet approved the dual citizenship bill, paving the way for the proposed bill to become law.

According to the proposed draft, applications for German citizenship can be submitted after 5 years of residence instead of 8, while those who demonstrate excellent integration and German language skills will be able to apply for permanent citizenship after only three years.

“We are introducing an innovative immigration bill that will improve our modern and diverse country, one of the most important reforms of our coalition government,” Interior Minister Nancy Fesser said at a news conference in Berlin. ., I am very happy that we are implementing it now.

He said that these reforms are necessary to attract highly skilled workers from abroad and to ensure the competitiveness of German companies. will only attract them if they can become a full part of our society.

Children born in Germany to foreign parents can acquire German citizenship if at least one parent has been legally resident in the country for at least five years. These children will also be able to retain the citizenship of their parents.

Currently, more than 12 million people in Germany – about 14% of the total population – do not hold German citizenship. According to official figures, about 5.3 million of them have been living in the country for at least 10 years.

When the Social Democrats, Greens and Liberal Free Democrats formed a three-party coalition government two years ago, reform of German citizenship law was at the center of the coalition agreement.
