Karachi: The administration of Federal Urdu University has decided to reconsider the increase in session fees up to 50 percent or more.

This decision has been taken in the context of the ongoing protest of the students and in this regard a review committee consisting of deans has been constituted while the recommendations of the committee will be presented again to the Academic Council for a final decision. During this time, students will not be charged late fees, however, the increase in fees will continue until a new recommendation of the committee and the decision of the Academic Council.

University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Ziauddin said in an emergency press conference that students have been protesting for the restructuring of fees for four days, but there has been no increase in fees from 2017 to 2020.

He said that a slight increase was made last year, due to the country’s situation, our grant has not been increased for the past several years, we asked for a budget of 3 thousand million rupees from HEC and we got around 800 million rupees. Yes, we have raised this matter at the federal government level.

The Vice-Chancellor said that we are working under the federal government, we do not get grants from the provincial government like other provincial universities.

He revealed that the chancellor of the university and the president of Pakistan expressed surprise that the university fee was so low that it should be increased and this was done in a meeting during the tenure of the former permanent vice-chancellor Dr. Athar Atta. The Vice-Chancellor said that the recent increase of 50% in fees has been done in consultation with the teachers and our fee structure is still very low compared to other government universities.

On this occasion, the director of finance of the university, Professor Iqbal Naqvi, said that the semester fee of Iqbal Abdul Haq campus departments is 6 thousand to 9 thousand and some departments are 10 thousand to 15 thousand, while the fee of science departments is 14 thousand to 29 thousand rupees per semester. Semester is done.

He said that our Vice-Chancellor contacted the HEC, Governor of Sindh and some senators in this regard and told that the expenditure of the university is Rs. It was said that due to the current situation in the country, there will be no further increase in the grant.

The director of finance further said that we do not have funds for purchase of equipment in the sectors, last year 1200 million rupees came from fees, after the increase, now there is a possibility of collection of 1800 million rupees.
