Indianapolis: Scientists have developed a drug that will prevent severe reactions caused by eating peanuts.
Experts say that the compound has currently been tested on rats in the laboratory and the drug will not be available to people in the near future.
But in preliminary experiments, researchers found that the drug protected lab rats from severe reactions to peanuts for more than two weeks. However, experts know that information from animals does not always apply to humans.
According to Mark Kaplan, chair of the microbiology department at Indiana University School of Medicine, the researchers’ goal is to create a self-administered injection that people with peanut allergies can administer once every two weeks or once a month.
This medicine will not solve the problem but it will provide an extra layer of protection for people with allergies.
