England: First successful womb transplant

Oxford: British doctors have made medical history for the first time by transplanting the uterus.

According to global media reports, surgeons at Oxford’s Churchill Hospital successfully transplanted a woman’s uterus into her 34-year-old sister in an operation lasting 9 hours and 20 minutes. The operation to remove the donor uterus lasted for more than eight hours.

Richard Smith, the surgeon who led the operation, told the British Press Association that it was unbelievable. I think it was probably the most stressful week of my surgical career but it was also incredibly positive.

The recipient woman was diagnosed with Mayer-Rokitansky-Kuster-Hauser (MRKH) disease. It is a rare condition that affects the female reproductive system.
