A law has been passed to increase the age limit for compulsory military service in Russia to 30 years.

The bill presented in the lower house of parliament said that from January 1, 2024, citizens aged 18 to 30 years can be called for military service.

Under the new law, recruits who are sent letters of duty cannot leave the country.

Currently, the law needs approval from the upper house and the signature of President Vladimir Putin to take effect.

Previously, military service was compulsory for men aged 18 to 27 in Russia, with conscription twice a year.

Today, the Russian Parliament also approved a law that citizens who receive a notice of duty and do not report to the military office will have to pay a fine.
