Karachi: 2 children died after falling into a pit filled with rainwater and an open drain in the city.

The first incident took place in North Nazimabad Block F, where three-year-old Ajmal fell to his death due to a gas blast in an under-construction drain constructed for sewage along with Gujar drain in Kausar Niazi Colony.

According to local residents, the children were busy playing in the rain. Some children were playing near the under-construction drain when suddenly a part of the drain collapsed as a result of which a three-year-old child Ajmal fell into the drain. The child was rescued by local residents but he lost his life.

Residents of the area say that the drain is under construction for a long time, sometimes the repair work starts in this drain and sometimes it remains open, the administration shows incompetence in the construction and as a result a three-year-old child died.

Saddened, the father of the late Nadhal, while talking to Express, said that he was at work when he got the information about the child on the phone, when he reached the scene, the child had already died.

The residents of Gujarnale blamed the federal agencies for the death and said that the project of this canal had been delayed for some time and the administration had put soil on it.

Residents appealed to the government to investigate, while social workers said no political figures came to ask.

The UC Labor Councilor of the area said that this project has been going on for the last two years, there is no supervision, there is poor work, the attitude of the administration is also inappropriate, accidents are happening ever since the drain work started.

The social workers said that the drain made for sewage was not filled and soil was left on top. The accumulation of gas caused a blast and the child fell. Due to this lack of seriousness, there have been eight deaths from Kausar Niazi to Wahid Colony in two years.

SSP Central Marufu Usman says that the police reached the spot and recorded the statement of the local residents, but the child’s parents have not yet contacted the police for the case.

The body was brought to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital by Edhi Ambulance. According to Edhi officials, the deceased child was identified as 10-year-old Shahadullah son of Kaleemullah.

According to the police, the heirs of the deceased child refused to take police action and took the body with them.
