The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has decided to suspend the status of Sweden’s special envoy on the desecration of the Holy Quran.
OIC Secretary General Hussain Abraham Taha also strongly condemned the burning of a copy of the Holy Quran in front of the Iraqi Embassy in Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark.
The OIC Secretary General expressed his deep displeasure at the repeated incidents of violation of Islamic sanctities, adding that such acts incite religious hatred, intolerance and discrimination with dangerous consequences.
He urged the Danish government to take necessary measures to prevent such provocative actions.
According to reports, the final declaration issued by the extraordinary session of the OIC Executive Committee said that such provocations are against the spirit of Articles (19) and (20) of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
All the countries involved in the meeting demanded that possible measures be taken while reviewing the official framework of relations with any country that desecrates the Holy Quran or other Islamic values and symbols with the consent of the relevant authorities, including suspension of the special envoy status.
According to the OIC statement, the Secretary General has also written a letter to the Swedish Foreign Minister about this decision.
