Parental mental illness may increase offspring's risk of preterm birth, study

Stockholm: A recent study has shown that if a father or mother has been diagnosed with a psychiatric disorder, there is a higher risk of having a child born prematurely.

According to media reports, researchers from Mount Sinai’s Icahn School of Medicine and the Karolinska Institute found in a study that when one partner in a couple suffers from a mental illness, they are more likely to have children born prematurely. The research was published in the open access journal PLOS Medicine.

According to the researchers, the study shows for the first time that having a parent with a mental illness increases the risk of premature birth, and that the risk is greater when both the mother and father suffer from the condition.

For the aforementioned study, the research team analyzed data from all births to parents born in Sweden, Finland, Norway, Denmark and Iceland between 1997 and 2016, and obtained data on psychiatric patients from the National Patient Record Register and gestational ages from the Medical Medical Register.
