For the first time in US history, a female admiral has been nominated to head the Navy

US President Joe Biden has announced that he will nominate a woman, Admiral Lisa Franchitti, to head the US Navy.

With this nomination, Admiral Lisa Franchitti will be the first woman in US history to command the Navy and serve on the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

But it is unclear whether the Senate will also confirm his nomination because a Republican lawmaker has blocked 200 senior military nominations.

President Biden said in his statement that Franchitti has served our nation as a commissioned officer for 38 years, currently serving as the Vice Chief of Naval Operations.

He said Franchetti would be the second woman to receive the rank of four-star admiral in the U.S. Navy and, if confirmed, would be the first woman to become chief of naval operations and serve on the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Franchitti, who served as deputy commander of the US Navy in Europe and Africa, became vice chief of naval operations in September 2022.

The four-year term of current Navy Chief Admiral Mike Gilde ends next month.
