British media has revealed that millions of US military emails were sent to Russia’s ally Mali by typographical error A simple typo in the domain has been sending US military emails to Mali for years, the Pentagon says. Steps have been taken to address the email issue.

According to the British media, the domain of the US Army is .mil and the domain of Mali is .ml. The emails of the US Army to Mali contained sensitive information such as passwords, medical records, maps of military installations, travel details of military officers.

The British newspaper Financial Times, which first reported the news, says that Dutch Internet entrepreneur Johannes Zwerbeer identified the problem 10 years ago.

It has a contract to manage Mali’s country domain and has reportedly checked thousands of malicious emails in recent months.

US officials say the US Department of Defense is aware of the issue and has taken steps to ensure military emails are not sent to wrong domains.
