'An additional 600 megawatts of electricity will be generated from coal by the end of this year'

Karachi: Mohammad Azhar Malik, Vice President of Site Operations, Sindh Engrol Coal Mining Company, has said that 600 megawatts of electricity will be generated from coal by the end of this year.

The journalists of Karachi who visited the coal mine in Thar Block 2 were told that currently 7.5 million tons of coal is being produced annually from the coal mine in Thar Block 2, from which 1300 megawatts of electricity is being generated in three power plants. And it is the cheapest electricity after nuclear energy. By the end of this year, the third phase of mine expansion will be completed and the annual production capacity will increase to 11.5 million tons.

He said the total power generation from Thar Coal will increase to 3300 MW. Thar coal has so far saved 2.5 billion dollars, 8 billion dollars can be saved annually by using it in fertilisers, cement and other power plants.

He said that after the expansion, the supply of Thar coal will also be started to a private power plant in Port Qasim, Karachi, which will generate 660 megawatts of electricity. The power plant installed in Thar Block One is also generating 1300 megawatts of electricity, so by the end of this year, 3200 megawatts of electricity will be generated from Thar coal coming out of both the blocks.

Mohammad Azhar Malik said that 100,000 megawatts of electricity can be generated for 200 years from the total reserves of 175 billion tons of coal in Thar. He said that 2.5 billion dollars have been saved so far by providing an alternative to expensive imported fuel while generating electricity from Thar Coal Block Two.

He said that apart from the cement industry, coal from Thar can be used in already installed power plants, while synthetic gas can also be used in the fertilizer industry, for which the mines of Thar can be connected to railway links. This proposal has been submitted to the Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif. By constructing a 100 km rail link, coal from Thar can be supplied to power plants and cement industries in the northern regions.
