Geneva: The United Nations Children’s Organization (UNICEF) says that in the first six months of 2023, 300 children have died trying to reach Europe.
The UNICEF chief told a media briefing that the death toll could be much higher because many shipwrecks in the central Mediterranean have left no survivors or been recorded.
According to an estimate, 11,600 children embarked on this journey in the first 6 months of 2023, which is almost double the number for the same period in 2022.
According to UNICEF, 71 percent of the 3,300 children who arrived in Europe via the main route in the first three months of this year were recorded together or separately. Girls traveling alone are particularly vulnerable to violence before, during and after their journey. Many governments are ignoring the issue or are silent when in just 6 months the waters between Europe and Africa About 300 children have been killed.
A boat trip from Libya or Tunisia to Europe usually costs around $7,000.
