Seoul: 24 people have died and thousands have been displaced due to landslides and dam breaks in South Korea on the third day of torrential rains.
South Korea’s Yonhap news agency quoted various provincial governments as saying that 24 people have died, 10 are missing and thousands have been displaced in various accidents due to the torrential rains that have been going on for 3 days.
As of 11 a.m., 1,567 people had been evacuated from various areas across the country as water rose above a dam in northern Chungcheong province on Saturday morning, according to the Interior Ministry.
In total, more than 7,000 people have been evacuated as a result of the evacuation orders. The South Korean Meteorological Administration has predicted that the number of evacuees is expected to increase as more heavy rain falls on Sunday.
Korea Railroad Corp. said it is suspending all train travel while other bullet trains may be delayed due to slow speeds due to the risk of landslides, track flooding and falling rocks.
A landslide in northern Chungcheong province derailed a train on Friday, slightly injuring an engineer but no other passengers, the transport ministry said.
