Gender reassignment is illegal in Russia

A bill to outlaw gender reassignment has been passed in Russia.

According to international media reports, members in the lower house supported banning sex reassignment operations and passed a bill to outlaw sex reassignment.

After the Upper House and President Putin’s approval, the bill will become law.

The bill would ban any medical procedure aimed at changing a person’s gender, as well as changing the gender in official documents and public records.

The only exception would be medical intervention to treat congenital problems.

The bill must be approved by Russia’s Kremlin-controlled upper house, the Federation Council, which usually rubber-stamps legislation approved by the Duma.
