Karachi: Karachi, the largest city of Pakistan, has become one of the worst cities in the world in terms of living conditions.
According to the Cities Index 2023 released by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) of the global journal The Economist, Karachi is among the worst cities in the world in terms of living conditions. After Karachi, only Algeria, Lagos, Libyan capital Tripoli and Syrian capital Damascus are included in the list.
Karachi is ranked 169 out of 173 cities in EIU’s Global Livability Index 2023. Karachi is the only city of Pakistan included in the index.
Cities are ranked on the basis of stability, health system, culture, environment, education and infrastructure and a score of one to 100 is given considering the conditions of the cities. One is considered unbearable while 100 is considered ideal.

Karachi’s overall score was 42.5 out of 100, which is less than an ideal score. Karachi got the lowest score of 20 for stability while it scored 50 for health system, 38.7 for culture and environment, 75 for education and 51.8 for infrastructure.
Among the most livable cities in the world, Vienna, the capital of Austria, ranks first, while Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, and Melbourne, Australia, rank third.
