Peshawar: In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, police cracked down on protesting teachers who have been waiting for promotions for 31 years, arrested 60 protesters and registered a case.
In Peshawar, the police arrested 60 protestors while cracking down on the SST teachers sitting on protest for the last three days.
The police registered cases against the arrested teachers and transferred them to the respective police stations. The provincial president of the teachers’ organization demanded the release of the protesters and said that our protest is peaceful and will continue until the demands are met.
He said that the police resorted to brutal lathi-charge and shelling to disperse the teachers while several protesters were locked up in the school by the officials. Even though the dharna is peaceful, the police and the administration are misbehaving.
The police took action after the failure of negotiations between the teachers and the government, who have been waiting for development for thirty-one years, after which the provincial president Zulfiqari announced that Mufti Mehmood would go to the center.
Later, the protestors staged a dharna in front of Mufti Mehmood Center where a heavy police presence arrived. Due to the sit-in, there was a traffic jam on the ring road due to which citizens had difficulty in commuting.
The provincial president of YSTs along with his delegation left for talks with the higher officials.
