Lahore: The High Court rejected the petitions declaring the detention of Khadija Shah and others illegal in the wake of the May 9 incidents.

A two-member bench of the Lahore High Court comprising Justice Ali Baqer Najafi and Justice Amjad Rafiq issued a 26-page written decision on the petitions, in which the detention of Khadija Shah, Huma Saeed, Rizwan Zia and Zubair Malik in the wake of the May 9 incidents. The judgment said that the case against the petitioners was over, the law was taking its course. At this stage, the detention of the petitioners cannot be declared illegal. Legal procedures cannot be bypassed. In this context, the police immediately registered a case and started investigation.

In the verdict, the court said that whoever was found involved in the May 9 incidents was identified according to the law. The events of May 9 revealed the intolerance and dangerous fanaticism of a charging mob. The events of May 9 also challenged the civil justice system. Before this incident, people had not seen such vandalism in Jinnah House. People’s anger was directed at the civil and military leadership, but what happened that day was inexplicable.

However, the state had to protect itself, the court said. Undoubtedly, the accused have legal rights, which the courts protect. The best strategy for the petitioners at this time is to follow the procedure of the law in a normal way. Bypassing the entire procedure will not benefit the applicants.
