London: According to new guidelines issued by experts, elderly people who suffer from fatigue or stagger when standing should have a panna vitamin B12 test.
One in 10 people over the age of 75 are deficient in vitamin B12, which can cause anemia, fatigue, blurred vision, balance problems, and mental confusion.
This vitamin is usually found in fish, meat, poultry, eggs and dairy products, but certain medications and autoimmune problems can block its availability in the body.
New guidelines issued by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence suggest that a blood test should be done if a person has any of the symptoms.
Factors associated with this condition include age (especially those 65 and older), digestive system surgery, and medical conditions such as type 1 diabetes.
According to the recommendation, if a person is found to be deficient in vitamin B12 after a blood test, B12 tablets or injections should be taken after determining the cause.
Vitamin B12 helps maintain a healthy nervous system and reduce fatigue. Our body uses the vitamin to make red blood cells to deliver oxygen to our tissues.
This deficiency is more common in older people as they age, meaning their bodies are not absorbing the vitamin regularly due to physiological changes.
