42% of children in Pakistan suffer from stunting, UNICEF

It has been revealed that 42 percent of children in Pakistan are victims of stunting.

Parliamentary task force meeting on sustainable development goals was held in Islamabad. UNICEF officials told the task briefing that 9.4 percent of boys and 9 percent of girls in Pakistan are suffering from obesity while 42 percent of children are suffering from stunting.

UNICEF officials further said that 20.5 percent of young boys and 20.7 percent of young girls are overweight. 12.6 percent of young boys and 12.1 percent of girls are suffering from diabetes. The committee was told in the briefing that the infant formula milk industry is growing. In Pakistan, 14.6% of children between 6 and 23 months of age are breastfed by their mothers, compared to 34% worldwide.

The Food Fortification Act has been passed in Balochistan and Sindh. Iron, zinc and vitamins are added to wheat. Only in Punjab, there is a ban on soda, energy drinks and junk food around educational institutions.
