Geneva: The United Nations has said that Israel has practically imprisoned more than 800,000 Palestinians in the occupied territory of Palestine.
According to Al Jazeera’s report, Francesca Albanese, the United Nations Special Representative for the situation of human rights in the Palestinian Territories, while presenting a report at the ongoing 53rd session of the Human Rights Council of the World Organization, said that since 1967, Israel has occupied the occupied territory of Palestine. It has been converted into an outdoor prison, in which more than 800,000 Palestinians, including thousands of children, are actually imprisoned.
According to the Special Representative, there are 5,000 Palestinians imprisoned in prisons built on Israeli soil, of which 1,100 have no charges. According to Francesca Albanese, 160 of these 5,000 Palestinian prisoners are children.
Francesca Albanese, while presenting a report titled “Unfortunate detention of Palestinians” at the meeting of the humanitarian council, said that Israel has given the occupied Palestinian territory the status of an outdoor prison.
Israel’s military occupation has turned the entire occupied Palestinian territory into an open air prison where Palestinians are permanently imprisoned and under surveillance.
The summary of the report states that Israel’s illegal detention of Palestinians is a serious international crime and requires immediate investigation by the International Court of Justice prosecutor.
The report added that the crimes appear to be part of a plan to ‘cleanse’ the area of Palestinians.
The United Nations Special Representative told the Human Rights Council that most Palestinians are being held in Israeli custody without any evidence, warrants, and charges, and are being subjected to persecution.
Francesca Albanese further told the Council that generations of Palestinians have been deprived of freedom in a widespread and systematic manner under the Israeli occupation.
