Decision to label government-linked accounts on social media

Canberra: Meta is going to decide to label the accounts of government agencies on its social media platforms, new platform threads like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

According to global media reports, META’s head of public policy in Australia, Josh Machin, told the Senate that several sectors such as government media houses and investigative bodies are very important and it is our desire to increase their importance.

The statement by a Meta official comes after the launch of Meta’s Threads, which is similar to microblogging site Twitter.

Asked in the Senate whether Russia’s state broadcaster RT or China’s state news agency Xinhua would be tagged according to the threads, the official said that is our desire.

He also said that any government-affiliated media will have its account blocked if it violates our policies.

It should be noted that in 2022, Twitter removed tags from government-affiliated accounts, which significantly reduced the media-literacy rate of users on Twitter.
