A 61-year-old German anesthetist doctor’s carelessness caused hepatitis C germs to spread to many patients.
According to the report, a 61-year-old German anesthetist was suspended for two years for causing harm to patients by negligently transmitting hepatitis C to patients.
The report stated that between February 2017 and April 2018, the German doctor administered anesthetic injections to 1700 patients (who came for any surgery) of which 51 were infected with hepatitis C.
In this case, the prosecution had asked the court for three years imprisonment against the doctor and is now considering an appeal against the said decision.
The doctor was said to be working at the ‘Donau Rise’ hospital, from where he had stolen anesthetics. Later he used these medicines himself to relieve his painful bowel disease.
The court considered the possibility that the doctor may have inadvertently contracted the disease from a patient and then inadvertently spread it to all the other patients.
However, the trial judge called it a ‘gross breach of hygiene’ and called the case a ‘medical scandal of the highest order’.
On the other hand, the retired anesthetist doctor has admitted his mistake, describing the court proceedings as a nightmare and also said that he has been battling severe depression for years.
As a result of the court proceedings, all patients who were given pre-operative anesthetic injections by the convicted doctor will be tested for hepatitis C within a specified period.
