Vienna: The daily publication of the world’s oldest newspaper, which had been running continuously for 320 years, has been discontinued.
According to the world news agency, the Austrian newspaper Wiener Zeitung is called the oldest newspaper in the world. For 320 years, this newspaper, which has been bringing the news of the world to the readers at their doorstep, will no longer be published daily in print form, but will be available “digitally”.
The newspaper had a daily circulation of 20,000 and a weekly off-weekly circulation of up to 40,000. The newspaper was owned by the government but functioned as an independent institution.
The newspaper was first published in August 1703. It then closed in 1939 during World War II, but resumed publication in 1945.
The last print edition was published on 30 June 2023 due to government policies that made daily publication of the newspaper impossible.
However, it has now been decided that the newspaper will not be published on a daily basis due to the government policies which are said to be a financial loss of 18 million Euros, while previously 63 employees were laid off to cut costs. was also discharged.
It may be recalled that the government had enacted a law in April that lifted the ban on companies paying for public announcements in print editions of newspapers. This was also the main reason for the financial loss of the newspaper.
Thus, with the cessation of publication of the Wiener Zeitung, the honor of being the world’s oldest daily newspaper has gone to Germany’s Hildesheimer Allgemeine Zeitung, which has been published since 1705.
