Jeddah: The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has said that collective action is needed to prevent incidents of desecration of the Holy Quran and that international law should be used to prevent religious hatred.
In a statement issued after an extraordinary meeting called by the OIC in Jeddah after the desecration of the Holy Quran in Sweden, the Secretary General of the organization Hussain Barhim Taha said, “We need the international law regarding the immediate application of international law.” The community must be constantly reminded that it clearly prohibits any advocacy of religious hatred.
Emphasizing the need to send a clear message, he said that the desecration of the copies of the Holy Quran and insulting the glory of our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ are not mere incidents of Islamophobia.
The OIC General Secretary said, “I call on the member states to take united and collective measures to stop the desecration of the Holy Quran and the insulting of our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.”
It should be noted that Muslim countries are protesting against the desecration of the Holy Quran outside an Eidgah in Sweden and the permission of the court for it, but the US has interpreted this move as freedom of expression.
According to international media reports, 37-year-old Iraqi Salwan Momika, who fled to Sweden several years ago, desecrated the holy book on the day of Eid when Muslims were celebrating Eid al-Adha in Sweden.
On the other hand, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan criticized Sweden for the incident and said that Ankara will never succumb to the policy of provocation or intimidation. He said that we will teach arrogant Westerners that insulting the sacred values of Muslims is not freedom of expression.
