Nairobi: A speeding lorry plowed into vehicles and crushed pedestrians at a busy junction in Kenya, killing 55 people.
According to the World News Agency, the accident happened on a highway between Kericho and the lakeside town of Nakuru, rich in green tea fields. A lorry loaded with containers lost control of its driver due to high speed on a busy highway in Kenya.
The cargo lorry first rammed several vehicles and later crushed several pedestrians. Around 100 seriously injured people were taken to hospital where 55 people were confirmed dead.
The hospital administration says that more than 30 people were injured in the accident, out of which 6 are being treated in the intensive care ward. The fear of increasing the number of casualties is being expressed.
More than 10 cars, minibuses and motorcycles were destroyed in the accident.
More than 21,000 traffic accidents took place in Kenya last year, of which 4,690 people died. In Kenya alone, 50 people died in a bus accident in 2018.
The World Health Organization said in September last year that Africa has the highest road traffic death rate in the world where more than 800 people die every day.
