Karachi: Pakistan Tanners Association has fixed the prices of leather sacrifice on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha, the price of cow and bull hide has been set at Rs 2200 while goat skin will be bought at Rs 450.
Ijaz Ahmed Sheikh, member of the executive committee of Pakistan Tanners Association and chairman of the board of Pakistan Leather Institute, told “Express” that despite the demand for leather for export, the price of cowhide has been set low. Caused by Lumpy Skin, a rash disease found in cattle.
Due to this disease, 35 to 40 percent of cow hides are lost and the cost of the leather industry increases, which is why the price of cow hide has not been increased to compensate for these losses.
He said that due to the devaluation of the rupee, the price of the hide of a healthy cow bull should be up to Rs 3000, but due to the proportion of damages caused to leather due to skin diseases, the price has not been increased this year.
He said that despite the economic crisis, the exports of the leather industry have remained at the level of one billion dollars and the demand for raw leather is also there.
Talking about the effects of inflation in Pakistan, he said that the leather industry estimates that due to inflation this year, the sacrifice trend across the country may decrease by 10 to 12 percent.
He said that more than 100 tanneries are working in Karachi, while most of the work of Wet Blue is done in Kasur, he said that the skins from Karachi account for 10 to 15 percent of the skins collected from all over the country.
