New Delhi: The Indian Finance Minister was irked by former US President Barack Obama’s statement regarding the atrocities on minority Muslims and abrogation of their rights under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government in India.
According to the foreign news agency “Reuters”, the Finance Minister of India mocked former US President Barack Obama’s comment that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government should protect the rights of minority Muslims.
Last week, while Narendra Modi was visiting the US, Obama told CNN that the issue of “protecting the Muslim minority in Hindu-majority India” should be raised by President Joe Biden during his meeting with Modi.
Obama said that without such protection “there is a strong possibility that India will begin to divide.”
To this, Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that she was surprised that Obama made such comments when Modi was visiting the US with the aim of deepening ties.
He said in a press conference that he was commenting on Indian Muslims […] That he bombed Muslim majority countries from Syria to Crimea during his presidency.
The Indian Finance Minister said, “Why would anyone listen to the allegations of such people?”
It should be noted that the US State Department has expressed concern over the treatment of Muslims and other religious minorities in India under Modi’s Hindu nationalist party.
