London: British authorities have revealed that children’s toys containing dangerous chemicals are being sold on the streets of the country. These chemicals on toys can cause negative health effects by affecting hormones in children.
Tests carried out on toys found phthalates in plastic items at stores in several areas at 300 times the legal limit.
Phthalates are chemicals used to make plastics more durable. The use of this chemical is highly restricted in the UK and Europe and no more than 0.1% of this chemical can be used in toys.
These phthalates can cause cancer and infertility problems and have long-term negative effects on the neurological and physical development of children.
Pregnant women and young children can be easy targets for the effects of this chemical. Putting toys in the mouth of young children can worsen their health issues.
According to the Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI), the use of phthalates in such quantities in toys is of grave concern.
