Uppsala: A new study has found that eating junk food can cause problems for our deep sleep.
A study published in the journal Obesity looked at the effects of healthy people’s diet on their sleep. 15 people participated in the study and ate unhealthy and healthy foods in a regular order.
Researchers found in the study that people who ate junk food had worse deep sleep quality than people who ate a healthy diet.
Poor diet and poor sleep increase the risk of a number of public health problems, said Dr. Jonathan Sedernis, associate professor at Uppsala University in Sweden. Just as what we eat is very important to our health, the researchers thought it would be interesting to study whether our diet could affect our sleep.
In the study, a group of 15 normal sleepers spent time in a sleep laboratory and were fed different diets for a week. During this time, their sleep, activity and eating habits were monitored.
Dr. Jonathan said the researchers found that the participants had the same amount of sleep when they ate the two meals. Also, after eating two meals, the participants slept an equal amount in different stages of sleep.
He said that the researchers were particularly interested in knowing the deep sleep characteristics of these individuals. Scientists specifically observed stage 3 sleep. Interestingly, people who ate junk food had less deep sleep than those who ate a healthy diet.
He said that this effect was maintained even after the same feeding on the second night. In fact, an unhealthy diet can lead to poor deep sleep. It should be noted that these changes in sleep also occur as a result of aging and insomnia.
He said that keeping sleep in front, it can be understood that more importance should be given to food in such conditions.
