Election Act Amendment Bill passed by majority vote

The Senate passed the Election Act amendment bill by majority vote, PTI and Jamaat-e-Islami opposed the amendment bill.

According to the Amendment Bill, section 57 of the Election Act has been amended, the Election Commission shall announce the date or dates of general elections.

Under the amendment bill, the Election Commission will be able to amend the election program, the Election Commission will be able to announce a new election schedule or a new election date.

Section 232 of the Election Act relating to eligibility and disqualification has also been amended to provide that the procedure and period of eligibility and disqualification shall be as provided in Articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution.

According to the amendment bill, the provisions of this Act shall apply where there is no provision or period for it in the Constitution, a person convicted under the judgment or order of any court shall be disqualified for 5 years from the date of judgment. .

According to the amendment made under Clause One F of Article 62 of the Constitution, the penalty of disqualification for not more than 5 years, the concerned person shall be eligible to become a member of the Parliament or the Provincial Assembly, the term of punishment for the crime in the Constitution. Not determined where disqualification does not exceed 5 years.
