Released on Eid-ul-Azha, the film ‘Madari’ is a story that depicts the past of Karachi and the story of a common citizen who is faced with political anarchy and goes through various situations burning in the fire of revenge.
In a press conference held at the Karachi Arts Council, director Siraj Al-Lakin talked about the name and story of the film in an exclusive conversation with Geo Digital.
He said that the main character of the story is a boy who is free but somewhere he feels that he is controlled.
He said that this is because of the political situation of Karachi, crime and every problem of the city that a common citizen is going through, that’s why we have named the film Madari.
Red and green flags of political parties
On a question whether the red and green flag in the story of the film is inspired by the flag of a political party? On which Siraj said that ‘No one has copyright on the color, red is the color of revolution which suited our story while green is a symbol of transparency.
He said that we have also used black color, but no political party has been targeted in Madari. This is not a political story but a common man’s story.
He said that it is a good thing that people will give their own opinion after seeing these flags in the film and it is also their right.
Madari is the directorial debut of Siraj Al-Lakin, who has previously done short films and theater. In the year 2014, his short film ‘Masters of the Sky’ was also included in the Cannes Film Festival.
The main character of Madari is played by Ibad Alam Sher who is an ordinary Karachi boy.
In an exclusive conversation with Geo Digital, Ibad told about his character that in this film, the viewers will see an ordinary Karachi boy whose father belongs to a political party, but in the heat of revenge, he is blamed by the system. One has to go through different situations.
On the question of how similar the main character of the film is to the youth of Karachi? Ibad replied that ‘I have had many friends, Urdu is spoken in different ways in every other area of Karachi. In the film, you will see me speaking in the same style as the youth of Karachi.
The story of Madari was written 16 times
16 drafts of the film were written, writer and producer Ali Rizvi told Geo Digital that the film was completed in 2 to two and a half years while the shooting took 30 to 35 days. We have shot in Lyari, Jamshed Road and other areas.
He said that bloodshed and anarchy have been seen in many places, but because we grew up in Karachi, we have seen Karachi more affected by these events.
He said that in Madari you will see an innocent person who has been abused, his mental and psychological suffering will be shown in Madari.
Ali Rizvi said that we all go through the situations and events of Karachi every day.
Talking to Geo Digital about the future of the film, co-producer Amar Ali Danish said, “We are all newcomers on the big screen, but all are talented artists in their own right.”
He said that the kind of content we are bringing, people see more on OTT platforms. Being a different film, we hope ‘Madari’ will appeal to the audience.
‘Madari’ will be released across Pakistan this Eid-ul-Adha and then worldwide. The cast of the film includes Paras Masroor, Hammad Siddique, Tanveer Gul and others.
