Sleep problems increase the risk of stroke

Virginia: A new study has found that people who have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep, or who wake up too early, are more likely to suffer a stroke than those who get a good night’s sleep.

American scientists found in a study that people who reported one or more symptoms of insomnia were 16 percent more likely to have a stroke than those without symptoms.

The researchers said the association was stronger in those under the age of 50 in the study, with those with five to eight symptoms four times more likely to suffer a stroke.

In research published in the journal Neurology, scientists report that the results show that the therapy can help reduce the risk of stroke by improving sleep quality.

“There are many therapies that can help people improve the quality of their sleep, so determining which sleep problems are the most important,” said study author Dr. Vandemie Swadogo, from Virginia Commonwealth University. 31,000 people with an average age of 61 participated in the research, and the examination lasted for an average of nine years. At the start of the study, these individuals had no history of stroke.

The study, which lasted more than a decade, revealed 2,101 cases of stroke, including 1,300 cases with one to four symptoms, 436 cases with five to eight symptoms, and 365 cases without any symptoms.
