North Korean President Kim Jong Un has banned suicide in the country.
He said in his order that committing suicide is ‘treason against democracy’.
He says that the local governments should take measures to prevent suicides, in case of suicides, the officials will be held responsible.
North Korea has not released suicide figures in the country, but South Korea’s National Intelligence Service said in a report at the end of May that North Korea has seen a 40 percent increase this year compared to last year.
Violent crime has also increased in North Korea as people struggle to make ends meet, South Korea’s intelligence service said.
A North Korean provincial official told Radio Free Asia that President Kim Jong-un’s secret order banning suicide was given at emergency meetings for party committee leaders at the provincial, city and district levels.
