South Korea summons Chinese ambassador for commenting on US relations

South Korea’s foreign ministry has summoned China’s ambassador to protest comments that accused Seoul of leaning toward the U.S. and distancing itself from China as the competition between Washington and Beijing for global influence intensifies. Adopting

South Korean Vice Foreign Minister Chang Ho-jin warned Chinese Ambassador Xing Haiming over his “absurd and provocative” remarks during a meeting with the South Korean opposition leader a day earlier.

The ministry accused Zing of violating diplomatic protocol and meddling in South Korea’s domestic politics, but did not elaborate on the parts of Zing’s comments that it deemed inappropriate.

Asked about the criticism, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said the current challenges in Sino-South Korean relations were “not because of China”.
