New Zealand’s armed forces have seen a surge in resignations, the force’s chief says, as the military’s budget increases have eased the highest rate of resignations in history.
30 per cent of trained staff in New Zealand’s forces have resigned over the past two years, forcing the navy to prematurely retire three ships and an entire fleet of P3 Orion aircraft because it lacked the manpower to operate them.
Defense Minister Andrew Little says he has been told that staff have withdrawn a number of resignations and that the number of resignations has also decreased, which was made possible because Defense Force employees were given bonuses earlier in the year. And they were told that there will be an increase in salaries from July.
The resignations in the defense forces come as New Zealand is under pressure to send troops to the UK to train Ukrainian forces.
The New Zealand government announced in May that the military budget would be increased by NZ$748 million over the next four years.
Half of this amount has been allocated to increase the salaries of the officials.
