New York: The war in Ukraine has shown that drones are an emerging threat in the new war scenario. Now the US Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) has developed a weapon called ‘Tactical High Power Operational Responder’ (THOR) which can target multiple drones at a time.

According to experts, in the changing context, swarms of drones can change the course of any air war and cannot be solved by conventional means. The Thor system is a solution that emits high-energy microwaves over a wide area. Although it does not burn the drone like a laser, the microwaves burn out the internal circuitry or short-circuit the electronics. Thus the hunter drone itself staggered and thundered to the ground.

Thor has been tested at Kirtland Air Force Base in New Mexico. Its aiming system locks onto the drone target in a millionth of a second and immediately disables it with microwave pulses. Destroy several drones at a time and show the way to the floor.

The cost of Thor is one crore eight million dollars. The 20-foot system can be easily mounted on C-130 aircraft and ground vehicles.
