Kosovo: 30 NATO peacekeepers injured during clashes with protesters

Pristina: Violent protests against the Albanian mayor in the Serb community area of Kosovo have also left 30 NATO-led peacekeeping force personnel injured.

Serbs tried to seize the offices of a municipality in northern Kosovo where Albanian mayors took office last week. Some of the clashes took place in the municipality of Zvicin, 45 km (28 mi) north of the capital Pristina.

NATO said in its statement that the injured personnel include 11 Italian and 19 Hungarian soldiers who suffered fractures and some burns from improvised explosive devices.

The statement added that three Hungarian soldiers were injured by the use of firearms, but their injuries were not life-threatening.

KFOR Commander Major General Angelo Michele Restoccia said that both sides need to take full responsibility for what happened and avoid further escalation of the situation instead of hiding behind false statements.
