New Delhi: India’s opposition political parties have said they will boycott the inauguration of the new parliament building by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
According to international media reports, 19 national and regional opposition parties in India said in their joint statement that Modi’s inauguration of the new parliament building without President Draupadi Murmu is not only a grave insult but a direct attack on democracy. .
The declaration also stated that the President of India is an appointed non-partisan executive who is the highest constitutional authority. When the President is ignored, the spirit of democracy has gone out of the Parliament and that is why we do not see the importance of a new Parliament building.
The new building is the centerpiece of a $2.4 billion project to move some of the most prominent institutions out of heritage, British colonial buildings into larger, modern facilities.
