What are the benefits of eating apples in old age?

Massachusetts: A new study has found that a compound found in apples and blackberries may reduce the risk of frailty in old age.

Researchers at Harvard University followed 17,000 people for 12 years and tried to find out how their diet affects their physical strength.

Researchers have found that quercetin, a flavonol found in apples and blackberries, reduces the risk of ageing.

Daily consumption of this flavonol in an amount of 10 mg (which is found in one whole apple) reduces the chances of losing weight in old age by 20 percent.

According to Dr. Shivani Sahni, lead author of the study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, the study found that high consumption of quercetin was most associated with protection against frailty in old age.

Which means that using quercetin-rich foods in a diet plan to prevent frailty in old age can be effective.

Flavonoids are a group of natural chemicals known for their antioxidant effects.

A previous study suggested that these chemicals may also help reduce the risk of high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke and diabetes in people.

Flavonols are a small sub-group of flavonoids, while quercetin is a specific type of flavonol found in apples, berries, onions, coriander and tea.
