Karachi: The country’s largest bio-floc fish farm has been established in Sindh. Here, fish and prawns will be bred and exported using modern methods.
In order to reduce poverty in Sindh, the construction of 60 tanks on one and a half acre area has been completed with the support of the World Bank. 50 tonnes of fish and prawns will be raised annually, the majority of which will be exported.
Biofloc is a method of growing fish, prawns and other aquatic life in water tanks that uses technology to monitor and control water parameters while recycling lost nutrients to feed the fish. It is used as food.
After small-scale farming in Sindh, now commercial farming by bio-floc method has also started and Pakistan’s largest bio-floc farm has been constructed with private investment in Tando Jam area.
Shaukat Hussain, a biofloc expert who provides consultancy and infrastructure support for the project and the founder and chairman of S-Sumic Company, an organization promoting the smart biofloc method in Pakistan, said that the climate of Sindh is suitable for fishes using the biofloc method. and is highly suitable for shrimp farming. Fish farming in Sindh is easy to export as well as meet the local market demand.
Shaukat Hussain said that the investment of 2 lakh 70 thousand rupees per tank for 60 tanks and infrastructure will be returned in two years after which this investment will continue to be a source of excellent profit for a long time. . He said that the farm in Tandojam will currently breed different types of tilapia fish, but after seeing the results of the shrimp breeding on a trial basis, the whole farm will be breeding shrimp, which will be exported when ready.
Shaukat Hussain said that biofloc farming in Sindh can be a very effective means of eradicating poverty and malnutrition and improving the quality of life in rural areas. Considering the usefulness of this method, the World Bank also plans to provide support to farmers for small-scale biofloc farming in Sindh with the support of the Sindh government.
He said that in the first week of May, a World Bank team visited Karachi and reviewed the support of biofloc farming projects. Government of Sindh and World Bank are evaluating Farmers’ Support Project for bio-floc farms consisting of 6 tanks for which feasibility study is in progress.
