New Delhi: The police force in India’s northeastern state of Assam has instructed overweight officers to either lose weight or retire to restore public trust.
According to international media reports, the Assam Police had given a specific deadline to the officers for the success of the fitness mission of the police officers. Assam Director General of Police GP Singh had announced that body mass index of all officers will be professionally recorded.
He said that those who are overweight due to medical reasons are exempted from this directive. Around 60,000 overweight police officers have been given three months to slim down or voluntarily retire. The aim of the directive is to improve the police force.
It should be noted that in 2020, a court in Indian Punjab barred overweight policemen from raiding illegal traders and drug dealers because they fail to run fast enough for frontline duty.
