Washington: In Syria, the US killed an innocent person by calling it the commander of al-Qaeda in an airstrike.
According to international media reports, US Central Command (CENTCOM) spokesman Major John Moore said that a civilian may have been killed in a US strike targeting a senior al-Qaeda leader in Syria, but further investigations are underway.
Lutfi Hassan, who was killed in the US attack on May 3, was 56 years old and a father of 10 children. The deceased was busy looking after his sheep and goats at the time of the attack.
Lutfi Hasan’s family has strongly denied that the deceased was related to Al-Qaeda. CENTCOM initially said the attack in early May targeted a senior al Qaeda leader, confirming the terrorist organization’s defeat.
It should be noted that the US continues to rely on airstrikes against armed groups across the region and claims that the strikes are carried out with high precision, but the US has previously admitted to several botched strikes. In addition, international media investigations, human rights and watchdog organizations say that civilians are often killed in US attacks.
