A documentary by the popular streaming service Netflix reunites a girl who was kidnapped at the age of nine with her father.
Ryan Skarka, who had full custody of his daughter Kayla Unbehon at the time of her disappearance, went to pick her up from her mother’s home in Wheaton, South Elgin, on July 5, 2017.
But this girl was kidnapped by her mother, Heather Unbihon, and so this mother ran around with her daughter for years.
The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children also published online missing person alerts and posted digital photos after the girl went missing.
She was then spotted and recognized by a store owner in Asheville, North Carolina last weekend because the store owner had seen the girl’s face in the Netflix documentary Unsolved Mysteries.
The store owner immediately called the police and the girl’s mother, who only had visitation rights at the time of the girl’s abduction, was arrested.
Authorities have notified Kayla’s father, Ryan, of the recovery of the girl, who is now 15 and is safe in protective custody.
