New season sweet juicy mangoes will be shipped from Pakistan to countries from May 20.
According to Waheed Ahmed, Patron General of Pakistan Fruit and Vegetable Exporters Association, 125 thousand tons of mango worth 100 million dollars will be exported this season. Mango exports from Pakistan are about 7% of the country’s production capacity of 1.8 lakh tonnes.
Major buyers of Pakistani mangoes include Iran, Central Asian countries, Gulf countries and the United Kingdom. Apart from this, European countries, Canada, America and Japan are also important markets for Pakistani mangoes.
According to Waheed Ahmed, this season’s long winter and delayed arrival of summer have affected the mango crop’s ability to fight diseases. Due to which the current season’s mango crop will be reduced by 20% i.e. 3 lakh 60 thousand ton.
According to Waheed Ahmed, climatic changes are affecting the mango crop. Mango research institutes in the country and provincial agriculture departments should provide resources and awareness to protect against climate change.
