In India’s northern state of Uttarakhand, 28 illegal temples and 330 shrines have been demolished in three months to restore protected forest areas.
Forest officials say that pre-1980 shrines will not be demolished, but according to media reports, one of the demolished shrines in India’s oldest Corbett National Park was 150 years old.
The Imam of Juwalapur says that he is not being listened to. One of the demolished shrines was the shrine of Chandanwale Baba, which was 300 to 400 years old.
Roorkee, Maulvi Arshad, head of the city’s Jamia Masjid and Madrasah Rahmaniya, has called the anti-encroachment campaign justified in the public interest.
It should be noted that 65% of the area of Uttarakhand consists of forests, most of the forests have been declared legally protected due to the rare species of animals and plants.
